The Word
Tony Hoagland

Down near the bottom
of the crossed-out list
of things you have to do today,

between “green thread”
and “broccoli” you find
that you have penciled “sunlight.”

Resting on the page, the word
is as beautiful, it touches you
as if you had a friend

and sunlight were a present
he had sent you from some place distant
as this morning—to cheer you up,

and to remind you that,
among your duties, pleasure
is a thing,

that also needs accomplishing
Do you remember?
that time and light are kinds

of love, and love
is no less practical
than a coffee grinder

or a safe spare tire?
Tomorrow you may be utterly
without a clue

but today you get a telegram,
from the heart in exile
proclaiming that the kingdom

still exists,
the king and queen alive,
still speaking to their children,

—to any one among them
who can find the time,
to sit out in the sun and listen.

This is a similar post to a one I’d put up a while ago- A poem and a reason for why I put it up. This is a similar phase too. But unlike last time, this poem doesn’t describe the phase I’m going through but pulls me away from it.Reaching home late every night, working like crazy to get assignments for class and scripts for the drama society ready, running from one place to another. The checklist in my brain and in my notebook for the things that have to be done never ends. There’s so much to do and even if a day had 48 hours it wouldn’t seem enough right now.
Not that I ‘m complaining. Busy is good, busy means you aren’t bored. I recently read a quote by Dorothy Parker that said ‘they sicken of the calm, who knew the storm.’ and kept it in mind to tell myself that even if I did have the time to breathe, I wouldn’t want it.
This poem reminded me why I was wrong. Like a song on loop, the lines “and to remind you that, among your duties, pleasure is a thing, that also needs accomplishing” are stuck in my head. I’m going to get sleep tonight. I’m going to get more sunlight from tomorrow. Though what sunlight is for me changes everyday.

  1. A very beautiful sentiment, that pleasure is something we need to look after and make a genuine purposeful pursuit of. We must choose joy, life, and love, then seek it with all our being.

    Thanks for the reminder.

  2. You don’t need to go looking for ‘sunlight’, or even even need to continuously redefine it in the amorphous context of daily life – you carry enough of it around, not only for yourself, but for all who know you or even just come across you in passing ;-

    ‘And our troubles quickly vanish
    As the storm-clouds backward roll
From the glory of the spirit,
And the sunlight of the soul. ‘
    __James S. Jennings

  3. pleasure is in small things-like reaching home late-exhausted-and know that you have to take the dog for his walk you walk into the house the dog looks at you with MAGIC in his eyes and a cold coke and a Big Boy burger ………… ……..yes?

  4. Years from now, you’ll read this post and remember that coming home late at night and thinking about having too much to do was a very happy time in your life. It is in that quiet time … in your future that you will experience such reflection … sigh and smile. Wonderful post …
